Use this checklist to gather everything before your SASSA office visit. Work through it item by item: certification has expiry rules, some documents are only needed for specific grants, and arriving complete means your application is captured on the day — with same-day receipt confirmation.
Documents every applicant needs
- Original 13-digit green ID book or smart ID card— Must be original at the office — copies alone are not accepted.
- Certified copy of your ID— Certification must be stamped within the last six months; SAPS commissions copies free.
- Proof of residence— Utility bill, rental agreement, or tribal authority letter. If homeless, a sworn affidavit with a ward councillor letter suffices.
- Three months of bank statements— Stamped or certified by your bank. Shows income (or its absence) for the means test.
- Marital status documents where applicable(optional)— Marriage certificate, divorce decree, or spouse's death certificate.
- Medical report (Disability Grant only)(optional)— Completed by a SASSA-contracted medical officer — state assessment, not your GP's letter.
- Proof of other income or benefits(optional)— UIF letter, pension slip, or NSFAS letter if you receive any of these.
- Children's birth certificates (child grants)(optional)— Required for Child Support, Foster Care and Care Dependency applications.
- Court order (Foster Care Grant)(optional)— The placement order from the children's court.
Certification rules that trip people up
- Certifications older than six months are rejected — re-stamp old copies before applying.
- SAPS stations certify ID copies free of charge; bring the original plus the copy.
- Bank statements must show your full name and account number on the bank's letterhead or app export.
- Foreign nationals: use valid permit documents — asylum section 22 permits limit which grants apply.
On the day itself
Arrive early, bring originals AND certified copies, and keep every receipt SASSA issues. Your application receives a reference number the day it is captured — that reference is how you track progress afterwards.
What documents do I need for a SASSA grant application?
Core four: original ID, certified ID copy, proof of residence, and three months of bank statements — plus grant-specific items like birth certificates for child grants, court orders for foster care, or medical reports for disability.
How recent must my certified ID copy be?
Certification must be stamped within six months of submission. Older stamps are rejected, so re-certify before applying.
I have no proof of residence in my name. What now?
Use a sworn affidavit confirming your residential address supported by a ward councillor or tribal authority letter. SASSA accepts these where formal utility bills are not available.
Can I apply without bank statements?
If you have no bank account, declare this at the office — staff will guide the alternative affidavit route. But opening a basic account is usually faster and helps you receive payments directly later.
Do I need an appointment?
No appointments are needed — offices work on queues. Arriving early in the morning, mid-month and mid-week gives you the shortest waits.
