SASSA Card Replacement Guide
Losing your SASSA card or having it stolen can be stressful, but getting a replacement is straightforward. Here is exactly what to do, where to go, and what documents you need.
Losing your payment card can feel like losing your only access to your grant, but your money is never gone — it stays safe in the SASSA system until you collect it. Whether your card was stolen, lost in a move, or the chip simply gave up, a replacement is a routine office visit. And while you wait, there is a cash option that works with no card at all.
If Your Card Is Lost or Stolen
Report it to the police (if stolen)
If your card was stolen, file a police report at your nearest SAPS station. You will need the case number for your replacement application.
Visit your nearest SASSA office
Go to your nearest SASSA local office with your ID document. If your ID was also stolen, get an affidavit from SAPS.
Complete the replacement form
A SASSA officer will assist you with the card replacement application form. Declare that your card was lost or stolen.
Receive your new card
The replacement card is typically issued within 2 to 4 weeks. You will be notified when it is ready for collection.
If Your Card Is Damaged
If your SASSA card is damaged (cracked, worn out, or the chip no longer works), visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID and the damaged card. Replacement is usually faster than for lost cards, often processed within 1 to 2 weeks.
How to Access Your Grant While Waiting
While waiting for your replacement card, you can still access your grant. Switch your payment method to Cash Send through the SRD portal. You will receive an SMS voucher that you can use to collect your grant at any Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Boxer, Checkers, or Usave in cash.
How much does a SASSA card replacement cost?
The first replacement is free. Subsequent replacements may incur a small admin fee at SASSA's discretion.
Can I still get my grant without a card?
Yes. Switch to Cash Send or bank transfer while waiting for your replacement card.
How long does a replacement card take?
Lost/stolen cards: 2 to 4 weeks. Damaged cards: 1 to 2 weeks.
