How long do I have to appeal a SASSA decline?
You have 90 days from the date of your decline notification to file an appeal. Appeals submitted after 90 days will not be accepted.
How long does the appeal process take?
The tribunal takes 60 to 90 days to issue a ruling. Complex cases may take up to 120 days.
Do I need a lawyer to appeal?
No. SASSA appeals are designed for self-representation. The online portal guides you through the process.
Can I appeal more than once?
You cannot appeal the tribunal's decision. However, you can submit a new grant application if your circumstances change.
Do I get paid while my appeal is pending?
No. Payments only resume if and when your appeal is approved. Backpay is then issued to the original decline date.
How do I get backpay after a successful appeal?
SASSA has 14 business days to process backpay after receiving the tribunal ruling. Backpay includes all months from the original decline date.
Can I appeal if I do not know why I was declined?
Yes. Select 'Other' as the reason on the appeal form and explain your situation. The tribunal will investigate.
What if I missed the 90-day deadline?
Unfortunately, you cannot appeal after 90 days. You must submit a completely new grant application.
Can I appeal in person at a SASSA office?
Yes, for non-SRD grants. Visit your nearest SASSA office with your documents and request a manual appeal submission.
Do I need to appeal every declined month for SRD?
Yes. Each month is assessed independently. You must appeal each month that shows 'Declined'.
